May 2012

I am sorry for the delay in getting this out. Give me one more month and I will be more timely, I promise.

The rain this week has slowed down the daytime traffic but once the sun comes out so do the golfers. Men's League is off and running with 14 teams this year. Tuesday Night golf is still growing in numbers, with 24 golfers on May Day. Winners were Chris Boyd, Lani Smith and Sheryl Payne with a 3 under par 31 and 2 skins (deuces on 4 and 6). 5th Place went to Linda Keeley, Herb Justmann and The Dawg with a 36. There was on more skin, a 2 on number 8 by Willie Regnier, Jeff Shelby and myself. I have to admit Jeff and I just congratulated Willie on his birdie.

The Calcutta sign-up sheet will come out Friday at noon. Dues should be paid by now, but must be paid by Friday to sign up. The $10 entry fee must also be paid to put your name on the list. We are willing to make as many 3 person teams as we have women and if possible we will have 3 men and 1 woman if we can get the numbers. The auction will be Friday May 18th and tee-off for the Calcutta is 10:00 Sunday May 20th.

As I mentioned earlier in the week, the golf and social kick-off was well attended and a lot of fun. Thanks to Susan Booth and Madonna Smithburg for taking the reins with the raffle, lining up prizes, signage, advertising and of course selling the tickets. We couldn't have pulled it off without them. The golf committee is busy working on ideas to spend the money raised ($1835) so keep your eyes out for some much needed improvements around the club and course.

We will be hosting our first Senior Coffee on Tuesday May 8th. With guests from Sunnybrook, The Wagon Wheel, Calu Apartments and Parkview coming to visit, it's sure to be a nice time. If you would like to stop out and visit and help pour coffee, we'd love to have you.

The kitchen hours have been increased to serve dinner Monday through Saturday 6:00-9:00 (5:30 on Friday) and lunch is now being served Tuesday through Saturday. The Monday men seem to be enjoying Kirk's creations, but don't let those guys scare you off. It's open for everyone.

Mark your calendars and make your reservations for Mother's Day Brunch, Sunday May 13th.

If you have a cart in the cart sheds you should have noticed a note on it asking for you name and your cart shed location. We are trying hard to get an accurate list of who is parked where and make new signs for each stall. I am working on an accurate accounting of who has paid their rent and who has not. We appreciate your help with this and may be clearing out the 1st shed to use for golf course equipment and get all of the carts in the 2 newer sheds. It was also mentioned that fixing a few leaks in the roof would be nice, so we will work on that too. If you have any other suggestions please let us know.

If you have any other feedback about the club I would love to hear it. I won't promise that I can fix it all, but I'll do my best.

Hope to see you out here enjoying the course and the clubhouse.
Joy
Thanks Richard Burke for the new handrail at the front door, it’s a dandy!

The board, staff and I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season.

Like most other clubs and many businesses our financial situation has suffered greatly in the last 3-4 years. We’ve tried to limit our expenditures and trim expenses. But do to the fixed and increasing nature of our expenses, we are forced to increase our dues what we consider a significant amount. The dues schedule for 2012 is attached along with the printable calendar. Also you will find notes from your board detailing our existing payment plans and introducing a new 9 month payment plan that we hope will make Walton affordable for our current members and help bring back our old friends and new members also.
Our annual Parent/Child golf tourney will be held 8/7 followed by the Family Picnic. We have added a twist to the golf. As long as the players are at least one generation apart they may play together without being related, after all aren’t we just one big family? Golf starts at 11 A.M. and you may play 9 or 18 holes. The picnic will follow about 5 P.M. and the club provides everything, just show up. Sommer will have games for the kids starting at 2 P.M. It’s a fun day, please join us for all or part of it.

The 3 Person Invitational is 8/27, tee time is 10 A.M. The cost is $60 per team and the field is limited to 27 teams. Sign up early.
Ed’s clinics will resume in September and we are looking for a date for a kid’s clinic. More details will be made available soon at the pro shop.
Please sign in every time you play.

CLUBHOUSE The Annual Meeting has been set for Oct. 23. There are two 3-yr. board seats to be filled this year. There will be an election sign up sheet posted on the pro shop counter.
In an effort to save money, bulk mailing of calendars will be eliminated at the end of this year. We need all current email addresses to send as many electronically as possible. There will be copies available to pick up at the clubhouse for those of you who are not available by computer.

Thanks this month to Joanne Hersh for weed removal from our flower beds, Jeff Payne for stump grinding on the golf course, and Shannon/Paula Messer for our new flag!

Walton members are invited to help celebrate the marriage of Ben Harris and Chelby Miller Sept. 3. The wedding is at Lake Darling at 5 P.M. with the reception to follow at the club.
All monies after payoffs and expenses go into the Brian Best Memorial scholarship fund for a graduating FHS senior. This event is dear to our hearts. Sign up now as space is limited.
Our Four Couple Invitational is July 17, tee time is 10:00 a.m. This is best shot with the men and women alternating shots. The cost is $30 per couple.

REMINDER
The course is closed during these events. We also close the course at 4 p.m. Monday for league play and 5:30 p.m. for couples golf on Fridays. If there are fewer than eight couples on Friday, we do allow other players out. Make sure you sign in every time you play.

CLUBHOUSE/SOCIAL
Welcome this month to two new social members, the Koettels and the Eckwalls. Anyone that has a new email address we would love to update our system.
Special thanks this month to Jim Gray and Bill Regnier for putting the new bar tables together.

Notes from the Board
The board has been working on some changes around the club and course and would like to share some of the progress with you.
We have started board work days and we are meeting one time a month to work around the club and course to help Larry and Kirk get some small and large projects done. We want to thank all of the members that have shown up for these projects to help.
We did some landscaping behind and in front of number two green, which looks like it is coming along. Spring clean up was the next project. New carpet strips were laid in the club house. We started the clean up around the old pink cabin on one, but that will be a work in progress for months to come. Some of the board members will be coming out in the evenings to clear some of the other dead trees off the course, so please have a heads up if you hear the chainsaw going.
The kitchen committee has been working hard to get a new menu out, which they are happy to say will premiere on July 5. We will be changing the way the food tickets are rang into the register, so please forgive us during the learning curve, but in the long run it will be easier to track our sales.
The new tables were donated out of a memorial from the family of Cliff Drummey, which we would like to thank them for thinking of the Walton Club.
If you have ideas or suggestions you would like presented to the board, you are welcome to email us as a group at waltonboard@lisco.com. If we have these emails in advance, it makes it much easier to do the research before the meeting or to brainstorm how we can get the projects done.
In closing, we as a board would like to thank the full membership for the support and participation you have shown us in the past, and we hope to see you soon on the course or in the club house. The Walton Board
All golf dues must be paid in full by 4/30. Bag tags have arrived, stop and get yours now. Anyone without a tag 5/1 will be in violation.
Members-you are responsible for your guest, their green fees and their behavior. All beer consumed on the golf course should be purchased in the clubhouse.
Men’s league play begins 4/25 weather permitting. Form your own 4 man team and play anytime you like on Monday. If you are looking for a team or a player, there is a sign up sheet on the bulletin board.
The ladies will still own Wednesday nights. They are trying to finalize an organized game.

SOCIAL/KITCHEN The clubhouse will open daily at 9:00 a.m. this month. Our kitchen hours will remain the same.
Spring clean up is scheduled for 4/16. Bring your rakes and strong backs and help us clean up around our clubhouse and golf course. We will provide lunch. We’ll work in the morning starting around 8 a.m. and with any luck; play a little golf after lunch.
We celebrate Easter Sunday 4/24 with brunch and an egg hunt for the kids. Brunch will be served 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. with the egg hunt to follow. Please make reservations.
Couples Golf kick-off is 4/29 tee off at 5:30 p.m. and it’s going to be a doozie!
We are going to have a luau and buffet followed by the Walton version of “Cash Cab”, a trivia game normally done while riding in a cab. Our cab driver will be the always amusing Shannon Messer. It’s also our annual golf membership drive with 25% off dues for new members. It’s time to encourage your friends to join.

I’ve had some complaints of animal excrement on our course. Please clean up after your animals.

There’s a benefit supper and auction for our friend Brandon Smith 4/23 5-11 p.m. at the Fairfield civic center. Please plan to attend and help us support Brandon and Carly in every way we can during his recovery.
Thanks this month to Sheryl Payne for her continuing work in the clubhouse and Jim Gray for his saw and labor. Thanks also to everyone who helped clean up around #2 green.

Dale and Jane Caylor would like to thank everyone who donated for the memorial tree in their daughter’s honor. It is greatly appreciated.
Here’s a new event for you- indoor miniature golf at the Walton Club. It’s 4/2 at 3 P.M. and will be a 9-hole event followed by final four basketball that evening. More details will be available later.

CLUBHOUSE/GOLF We will continue to run winter hours through March although if the weather gets nice there will be someone in the clubhouse. Remember to sign in and check course conditions before you play and especially before running carts. These are Larry’s tips for spring. Don’t play if there is frost on the ground. Please tread gently around #2 green, it was tilled last fall. Don’t walk in the clay-you should carefully remove and drop your ball away from it. There will be a work day scheduled this spring to finish the work and we will require some volunteers.
The golf calendar has been set and will be available with the April calendar. We can still use more volunteers for the golf committee.
Please remember to use all drink tickets you have by 3/31. New tickets have been printed that have one year of validity and are available now.
Anybody that has a new e-mail address and would like to receive the calendar/notes electronically, please give us your address.
